Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus Automatic Updates

The latest update (15.0.4569.1507)   to Office 365 Pro Plus includes the Service Pack 1 for Office 2013.

I was wondering how this would impact Office installation with Automatic Updates enabled. Microsoft recommend to have the auto update feature enable so that Office 365 Pro Plus is always up to date with the latest and greatest. But what happens when you include a whole service pack? Well.. After some network sniffing it turns out the update will grab 496MB from the public cloud.. Try for yourself.

So that means if you have 6000 users with Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus, spread all over the world with low bandwidth destinations. All grabbing the content from the public cloud. You can do the math 😉

Recommendation:

Disable Automatic Updates, and use a central update store or deploy the updates with Configuration Manager.
